Former Gopher great Charley Mencel played for the Gophers under head coach O.B. "Ozzie" Cowles from 1951-55.
A First Team All-American and Big Ten selection, Mencel averaged 18.6 points and 5.0 rebounds during his senior season in 1955.
Following his career at Minnesota, Mencel was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in the second round of the 1955 NBA Draft and played two seasons for the hometown club. Mencel’s jersey was retired by the Gophers in 2010.
The outstanding Gopher career of Charley Mencel is today’s Land O’Lakes Great Moment in Gopher history.
