The 1989-1990 Gopher Men’s Basketball team will go down as one of the best in school history, in large part because of their upset victory on March 23, 1990 at the Superdome in New Orleans.
A number six seed in the tournament, the Gophers pulled off an improbable 82-75 upset over number two seed Syracuse to advance to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. Led by 20 points from Melvin Newbern and 12 rebounds from Richard Coffey, the Gophers shut down a Big East champion Orangemen roster that contained future NBA #1 pick Derrick Coleman.
The team’s Cinderella run was upended by Georgia Tech in the Elite Eight. The game marked the last for Gophers legend Willie Burton, who remains a school record holder with 97 points in the 1990 Tournament and 171 career NCAA tournament points.
