In 1973, the team "Burevestnik" was created at the newly formed Altai State University. Under the guidance of coach Ivan Voronkov, who headed the team in 1979, Burevestnik in Soviet times competed in city and regional competitions, as well as in the USSR Cup for teams from Siberia and the Far East.
Barnaul "University" made its debut in the Russian championship in the 1995/96 season in the third most important division. In 2003, Ivan Voronkov's wards took 3rd place in the highest league "B" and received a ticket to the highest league "A".
