There's More to French Club than French
So, I stumbled across some of pictures of French club work by the children (See my other video on this), and I realised that maybe the Parents do not see just HOW much other growth their child does in French club, in addition to learning and developing a passion for French.
Children don’t just learn French in Natasha’s French Clubs!
There’s so much more!
It seems they enjoy coming along.
Often, you can hear a little screech and running feet down the corridor…. “Natasha!!!” the young ones shout!
With French prompts as reminders, children learn table manners and when to talk; to tidy away their food and rubbish; to look after their belongings and not to leave anything behind.
Sharing Good News
The children always seem to like to share with Natasha and their peers, their good news and achievements.
Certificates, prizes and awards.
Drama
Natasha gently encourages all children to take an active role in performance.
Most children love performing; favourite activities include pretending to be teacher teaching the others words we’ve just learned and singing our songs.
So, they are given a short opportunity to do this while the children settle for snacks (if applicable).
In addition to building the child’s confidence and self-esteem, we can comment on this in French when children are all listening carefully.
When children are watching others, they are taught to be considerate when giving feedback.
The children also naturally correct each other’s French. This shows they are not only listening out and analysing what they hear, but that they care about it being correct. Great news as Natasha aims for perfection!
Feeling Valued
The French club works as a group, so all new children are welcomed by the regulars. The children are very caring where they might offer each other a smile or reassurance.
The children help each other with things, often voluntarily when they see a need. Working in small groups gives children a sense of belonging and focus.
Natasha works with each child over the course of the lesson, ensuring each one gets some support.
Naturally, children will want to tell Natasha stories. Believing this is important for the child to feel valued in class, she gives the child a small amount of time to tell their news with her full attention, responds in French then moves their focus back to class.
Numeracy, Literacy and IT
Natasha will subtly correct spoken and written English grammar where possible.
Many activities feature Parts of Speech and children offer their knowledge of what they’ve learned in school. For example, Natasha can also remind them what verbs, adverbs, adjectives are.
Our interactive role-play with props include buying things and calculating prices. Children learn well through this play and develop numeracy skills from their own thinking, peer and tutor support.
As Natasha uses a lot of technology in class, children develop an understanding of using a computer and an iPad. They will pick up on things I do and ask me how I did it.
Confidence
It’s not just speaking and performing confidence that increases, it’s the self-belief that a child can read simple French words, that they can complete a word quiz, that they can work things out. Having a small class, means Natasha can give them the reassurance and nudge they need.
Other children gain great confidence from knowing that they have helped someone learn something or to spot a mistake. Knowing they've helped the teacher makes them feel good too.
Praise culture, it’s not only from Natasha that your child will get praise. The other children congratulate on progress and when children show off their skills randomly at home, in the car or out shopping, you will want to too!
