H aspiré vs H muet - Difference Explained!

There are two types of h in French: the silent h and the aspirated h. So what is the difference?

???? Unfortunately, there is no general rule to memorise.

✅ My advice: learn nouns starting with h with a definite article. That way, you will know whether the h is silent or aspirated.

The silent h acts as a vowel and you need to do the liaison with the word which comes before.
For example: un homme, une histoire. (A man, a history/story)
If you use a definite article, then you need to use l’ instead of le or la.
For example: l’homme, l’histoire.

*Note* If the noun starting with a silent h is feminine, then you need to use the masculine form of the possessive adjectives.
For example: mon/ton/son histoire, not ma/ta/sa histoire.

For the aspirated h, it behaves like a consonant and the liaison is not allowed.
For example “la”: la hanche, and not the l’. (the hip)
When it comes to possessive articles, you have to use the feminine form: ma/ta/sa hanche, not mon/ton/son hanche.

le hibou (the owl)
la hanche (the hip)
le haricot (the bean)
le héros (the hero)
la haine (hatred)
le hasard (chance/coincidence/hazard)
le hérisson (the hedgehog)
la hache (the axe)
le hangar (the shed)
le handicap (the handicap)
le hockey (hockey)
