Have you ever wondered what these two dots on top of letters in French called?

This is called un tréma. It changes the pronunciation of a word in French. So when the tréma is on the letter I or U or E these letter will be pronounced.

So mais (but) vs maïs (sweetcorn/corn)

The tréma usually appears on the following vowels:
- ï : aïeul (ancestor), naïf (masc adj.) (naive), etc.
- ë : Noël (Christmas), canoë (canoe)
- ü : aigüe - feminine form of aigu, recommended since the spelling reform of 1990 (acute)
