In French, we have masculine and feminine gender for nouns : un arbre / une fleur. Also, there are nouns that can be masculine or feminine depending on whom you’re talking about : un boulanger is a man / une boulangère is a woman.
That’s pretty simple, BUT hundred of years of machismo means that how men and women are treated is often unfair. This translates extremely well in the implied meaning of the feminine of certain nouns. Where, to put it bluntly, those feminines are… how should I put this… yes… insults. Nice, hey?
