The Gopher Football team has some of the fastest players in the Big Ten, but have you ever wondered just their speed stacks up to, say, the Big Ten's top sprinters in track and field?
Let’s compare Jalen Merck’s 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last season against Northwestern to the reigning conference champion sprinter in the men’s 100-meter dash.
Last year’s Big Ten champion from Illinois ran the 100-meter dash in just 10.27 seconds.
During the first 15 yards of his kick return, when he’s still gaining acceleration, Myrick is moving at a 15.9 second 100-meter dash pace — fast, but he’s just getting warmed up.
The last 30 yards of his return is when Myrick really turns on the jets — he’s moving at an 11.27 second 100-meter dash pace, which, if he kept it up for 100 meters, would have placed him just outside the top 25 at last year’s Big Ten Championships.
Here’s the catch — Myrick was wearing about 20 pounds of equipment and carrying a football during his sprint!
