In French, abstract nouns ending in -eur are usually feminine, while non-abstract nouns ending in eur are usually masculine.

As always though, there are some exceptions.

Feminine:
la chaleur - the heat
la peur - the fear
la hauteur - the height
l’odeur - the smell
la pâleur - the paleness
la douceur - the softness
la couleur - the colour
la rumeur - rumor

exceptions:
le bonheur - the happiness
le malheur - the misery
le secteur - the sector
l’honneur - the honour


Masculine:

l’ordinateur - the computer
le compteur - the meter
l’aspirateur - the vacuum cleaner
l’ascenseur - the lift
le moteur - the engine
le décodeur - the decoder
le tracteur - the tractor
le curseur - the cursor
